Austria Sees a Decade-Low in Asylum Applications in July, Reflecting Broader Regional Trends

AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In July 2026, Austria recorded only 244 new first-time asylum applications, marking the lowest monthly total in a decade. This figure represents a roughly 65% decrease from the 697 applications filed in July 2025, according to Austria’s Interior Ministry. When combining first-time and subsequent applications, the total asylum filings for July reached 840. These figures indicate a significant decline in asylum requests across Austria during the first seven months of the year.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

Between January and July, Austria received 5,743 asylum applications, a drop from 10,442 during the same period in 2025—about 45% fewer than the previous year. The total includes various application types, with the July number of 244 referring exclusively to new, original claims. Monthly asylum data published by Austrian authorities differentiates between new applications and repeat filings to offer clearer insights into migration patterns.

Syrian nationals submitted 267 asylum applications in July, making them the largest nationality group for the month. The ministry noted that most Syrian claims involved children born in Austria rather than recent arrivals. Austria continues to enforce restrictions on family reunification in certain asylum cases. So far in 2026, authorities recorded 60 related entries, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025.

Decreases in Returns and Border Detentions

Austria also experienced more departures than first-time asylum applications during the first seven months of 2026. By the end of July, 8,856 individuals had left the country through voluntary or forced removals, including 4,615 forced removals and 4,241 voluntary departures. Additionally, authorities completed 392 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin system, which allocates responsibility for processing asylum claims among member countries.

Border apprehensions in Burgenland, located in eastern Austria, have also declined compared to previous years. From January to mid-August 2026, authorities recorded 339 apprehensions, a steep drop from nearly 16,000 during the same period in 2023. The Austrian Interior Ministry attributes this reduction to enhanced enforcement and cooperation measures with neighboring Hungary. Police involvement in Operation Fox, targeting migrant smuggling and irregular border crossings, further supports these efforts.

2026 Asylum Numbers Continue to Fall

The July figures follow a trend of declining asylum requests in the first half of 2026. During this six-month span, Austria received about 5,000 applications, with departures surpassing new claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner described these numbers in the context of the government’s latest migration report. Austria has also maintained voluntary return programs for Syrians, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving the country in July, according to official figures.

The latest data clearly demonstrates a year-on-year decline in both first-time and overall asylum applications. July’s 244 initial claims represent the lowest point in a decade, as highlighted in government reports, with the total for that month reaching 840. From January through July, the total applications dropped to 5,743, well below 2025 levels. Austrian authorities continue to track these figures as part of ongoing asylum and migration monitoring, providing separate data for applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions.
