European Union Extends Wildfire Support Across Multiple Countries in Europe

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – European Union has activated a broad range of resources, including aircraft, helicopters, ground personnel, and satellite mapping, as wildfires challenge emergency services throughout Europe. Both Belgium and Spain requested assistance via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism as fires spread across various regions. These recent deployments enhance cross-border cooperation alongside national firefighting efforts during the intense 2026 fire season. By the end of July, the extent of burned land in Europe was approximately 2.5 times higher than typical for this time of year. The aid was prompted by separate national requests, not a continent-wide emergency alert.

EU expands wildfire response across Europe with support
European countries expand joint wildfire response as fires strain emergency services.

In Belgium, Sweden dispatched two rescEU firefighting planes to assist crews fighting the Hautes Fagnes wildfire. Germany and Norway each contributed two helicopters, with Dutch aerial support also participating. EU officials confirmed two Dutch helicopters were deployed, while Walloon authorities listed one among active resources late Monday. To date, over 3,000 hectares have burned in the Belgian fire zone according to the latest EU assessment. Emergency crews from roughly 20 Belgian zones remain on-site, working on the ground.

By Monday evening, nearly 500 individuals and more than 120 vehicles were involved in Belgium’s firefighting efforts, according to Walloon officials. Ground teams operated where terrain permitted, with farmers assisting in water supply for firefighting. Although the fire stayed contained in accessible sectors, it continued to spread overnight into areas unreachable on foot. Residents of Sourbrodt were permitted to return home Monday night, though some in Küchelscheid remained displaced. Authorities maintained road and reservoir closures to ensure emergency access.

Cross-border teams bolster firefighting efforts in Spain

In Spain, France sent 104 ground firefighters and 36 vehicles to strengthen crews in Aragón. When the European deployment was announced, the region had already burned nearly 16,000 hectares. The forestry authority in Aragón issued red alert for 14 fire danger zones on Aug. 18, up from eight zones on Monday. The official report indicated very high or fully available dead fuels across the central and northern parts of the region. French teams joined Spanish firefighters already engaged in firefighting within the affected area.

Satellite imagery is supporting emergency services across Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service provides rapid mapping to help authorities evaluate burned areas and coordinate field operations. This geospatial data is crucial during active wildfire emergencies, offering detailed terrain information. The European Commission coordinates international assistance, covering transport and operational costs related to deployments. Satellite-based mapping ensures timely data for response planning during natural disasters.

European Union’s coordinated firefighting efforts cover multiple hotspots

Affected countries can request assistance through the civil protection system when their own resources are overwhelmed. The Emergency Response Coordination Centre manages incoming requests, matches them with available offers, and facilitates the movement of personnel and equipment. Ahead of the 2026 fire season, Europe pre-positioned 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters in its shared fleet. Additionally, 777 firefighters from 14 countries—Belgium, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal—were stationed in Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, ready for deployment during major crises. This reserve provides participating nations with readily available resources for large-scale emergencies.

In Belgium, coordinated efforts involve aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, drones, and local logistics. Spain’s firefighting operations received additional support from French personnel and vehicles. Across Europe, satellite mapping underpins the management of multiple wildfire incidents. The Civil Protection Mechanism enables international aid after countries submit requests through the EU system, which both Belgium and Spain have activated amid this wave of wildfires.
