Belgium Reveals Regional Impact of Obesity on Mortality Rates Across the Country

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – In a significant public health announcement, Belgian research institute Sciensano disclosed that excess body mass index was responsible for 9,509 deaths in 2022. This figure represents 8.2 percent of all fatalities in Belgium that year, translating to more than one death every hour linked to weight-related health issues. By analyzing population-wide BMI-related mortality for the first time, researchers found that obesity-associated conditions caused over 150,000 years of life lost cumulatively.

Belgium health data shows obesity linked to 8.2% of deaths
European medical organizations track metabolic risk factors to develop health policy guidance.

This comprehensive epidemiological study investigated causes of death to understand how high BMI contributes to chronic illnesses. The findings indicate cardiovascular diseases as the leading cause, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 deaths. Neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer disease and other dementias, accounted for 1,652 deaths, while cerebrovascular diseases contributed to 1,171 deaths. Other significant factors included chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers.

Demographic data reveal that mortality risks linked to excess weight increase notably with age. Those aged 65 and over experienced the highest rates of weight-related health issues. Gender analysis shows men generally had higher mortality rates across most age groups, but women aged 85 and older recorded higher overall death numbers. This pattern is attributed to women’s longer average lifespan, according to epidemiologists.

Cardiovascular Issues as Main Drivers of Obesity-Related Deaths in Belgium

Regional analysis across Belgium highlights stark differences in death rates related to obesity. The southern region of Wallonia had the highest mortality rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 residents. The Brussels-Capital Region followed, with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 residents. Flanders recorded the lowest rate, at 73.60 deaths per 100,000. Experts suggest these variations reflect underlying socioeconomic factors, dietary habits, and healthcare access across Belgium.

This data release coincides with ongoing policy evaluations led by the Federal Public Service Health, which manages national health initiatives. Officials are using the findings to assess the long-term economic impact of chronic non-communicable diseases on the healthcare system. The methodology involved calculating the population attributable fraction for each condition, establishing baseline estimates to inform future preventative strategies.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease Responsible for Over 1,600 Deaths

At the European level, organizations like the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to coordinate regional health policies. Belgium’s report aligns with broader EU objectives aimed at reducing early mortality from non-communicable diseases. The World Health Organization continues to endorse integrated strategies, including public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention, to mitigate metabolic risks.

These findings provide an empirical basis for health authorities across Western Europe to target the reduction of high BMI prevalence. Quantifying death numbers and years of life lost enables public health planners to prioritize screening, intervention programs, and lifestyle modifications. As regional governments analyze these data, federal health efforts are expected to emphasize early prevention to decrease chronic disease rates nationwide.
