UN Calls for Accelerated Global Response to Widening Ebola Crisis in DRC

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has urged swift international intervention as the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to spread across six provinces. Fletcher informed UN member states that the epidemic is advancing more rapidly than previous Ebola outbreaks, emphasizing the need for increased funding and better humanitarian access. This appeal comes amid rising infection rates, ongoing insecurity, and mounting strain on healthcare services in eastern and northern regions of the country.

UN urges faster global action as DRC Ebola outbreak spreads
DRC Ebola response expands as health authorities confront rising cases across six provinces.

The World Health Organization reported on September 1 that the outbreak surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 3,000 deaths. The disease now affects 60 health zones across Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo provinces. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described it as the second-largest Ebola epidemic ever and the quickest-moving recorded outbreak. Ituri remains the primary transmission hub, accounting for most cases since the outbreak’s inception.

The epidemic involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus and was initially detected in May 2026. WHO has classified it as a public health emergency of international concern. As of August 26, WHO reported 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths in the DRC, with totals crossing 6,000 shortly after. The agency also documented 1,293 recoveries by that date. Efforts continue across affected areas, including surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, clinical care, and community engagement.

Conflict and fragile health infrastructure hinder Ebola response

This Ebola crisis coincides with a broader humanitarian emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher highlighted that nearly 11 million people require aid due to conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Violence in eastern DRC has hampered access for healthcare and relief teams. Since activating an emergency mechanism on June 9, the United Nations has expanded its response, establishing operational humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni to support field efforts.

Medical personnel working on the ground face serious dangers. Fletcher noted that more than 40 healthcare workers have lost their lives to Ebola, and facilities such as treatment centers and ambulances have been targeted. WHO data up to July 30 recorded 151 confirmed infections among health workers, including 44 fatalities. Emphasizing prevention, WHO advocates for safer clinical practices and increased protection for responders. The organization also stated that ongoing unidentified transmission chains and deaths outside treatment centers continue to challenge containment efforts.

Funding boosts and vaccine research accelerate amid rising case numbers

The updated 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the DRC allocates $2.1 billion, with $300 million dedicated to Ebola activities. Fletcher called for greater and more flexible international funding to support both the outbreak response and wider humanitarian operations. Separately, WHO has outlined a government-led six-month Ebola response plan requiring $1.3 billion, urging member states to expedite their contributions as efforts expand to include surveillance, treatment, laboratory work, community outreach, and other public health strategies.

On September 1, WHO also released revised vaccine guidelines as researchers explore options against the Bundibugyo virus. The agency noted that current evidence does not confirm whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers meaningful protection against this Ebola strain in humans. It recommended administering the vaccine solely within research protocols until further data is available. WHO and Africa CDC continue supporting the Congolese government’s response, focusing on case identification, transmission interruption, and community protection across the six affected provinces.
