The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero reported approximately 2.076 million installations nationwide. In June, households, businesses, and developers added 27,391 systems, generating an extra 132 megawatts of capacity. These provisional figures may be revised as additional project data is incorporated into the national database. The total encompasses domestic rooftops, commercial sites, and utility-scale solar farms.

June ranked as the second-highest month for installation figures in the UK data series, trailing March 2026 with 28,782 systems added. Over the year to June, solar capacity increased by 2.2 gigawatts, a growth of 10.9%. The market also saw about 269,000 new systems installed in 2025, marking the highest annual total ever. Smaller rooftop arrays led the count, while larger projects contributed most to the added capacity.
Attention now shifts to plug-in solar rules set to take effect on August 27, 2026. This framework permits approved microgenerators to connect through a standard UK plug and household socket. Qualifying products are limited to delivering no more than 800 watts of alternating current and must meet Interim Product Specification version 2, ensuring safe operation within the local distribution network. Plug-in batteries and devices that store electricity imported from household circuits are excluded from these regulations.
Safety standards regulate plug-in connections
The legislative update amends the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The amendment establishes a specific exception to restrictions on generating equipment plugs, requiring a notified body to verify that each plug complies with relevant BS 1363 standards. Product approval is valid across the UK, while the safety regulation changes apply to England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim specification sets criteria for electrical design, mounting systems, fire safety, labelling, and consumer instructions. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, with results showing stable operation and no sustained unsafe energisation or thermal issues. The study also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality. These findings contributed to the UK-specific safety standards necessary for legal market access.
Market prepares for approved plug-in products
During the government consultation, 466 responses were received from businesses, experts, regulators, and the public. Over 85% supported the interim specification, and most respondents also favored the plug-in amendment. Stakeholders included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Some raised concerns about older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear instructions, while others called for a distinction between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems.
Retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are preparing for the new product category. This option benefits households unable to use traditional rooftop systems, including renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. Systems relying on the new connection method cannot operate legally before August 27. Starting then, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through a standard household socket. The June total capacity does not include systems utilizing the new plug-in framework.
