VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is in the final stages of preparing BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite and the largest spacecraft built domestically to date. This satellite aims to identify and evaluate interference affecting worldwide navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo. Austria intends to send BEACONSAT into orbit in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle. Originating as a TU Wien spin-off in 2022, GATE Space specializes in chemical propulsion systems that enable satellite maneuvering in orbit. For BEACONSAT, the company provides the propulsion units, satellite structure, and thermal management solutions. To date, GATE Space has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport, simulating atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core Austrian technology powers the satellite project
Several European firms contribute critical components to Austria’s first military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies technology to detect and analyze GNSS interference with high precision, while Denmark’s Space Inventor provides additional satellite systems, including the onboard computer. The project combines commercial hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has supported GATE Space with approximately 750,000 euros via Austria Wirtschaftsservice.
The European Space Agency backs and co-funds the mission through its ESA Marketplace program, which facilitates testing of commercial space technologies in security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an operational satellite system. The mission will collect data on satellite navigation interference from orbit, feeding insights into the Defence Ministry’s efforts to bolster military space capabilities.
